Annual ceremony honours members of MGEU Local 911 in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg (21 May 2010) - More than a hundred citizens and a host of dignitaries attended the second annual Celebration of Life Awards ceremony and luncheon to recognize two civilian heroes and a host of paramedics for their courageous action in saving lives over the past year.
All are members of Local 911 of the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE).
"The celebration of Life Awards ceremony provides us an opportunity to showcase a small sample of the great work done by department employees every day,” said Jim Brennan, Winnipeg's fire paramedic service chief.
“During the ceremony department members are recognized for their extraordinary service and civilians receive recognition for their contribution in helping make Winnipeg a safer place."
The event, which is part of EMS Week celebrations, also provides an opportunity to see and understand the challenges paramedics face on the job each day.
“I appreciate the chance for members of the public to get a glimpse into what we do as EMS workers in Winnipeg,” said Chris Broughton, president of Local 911. “Whether it’s delivering babies or dealing with heart attacks or attending to major trauma cases, we’re there and we’re proud of what we do on behalf of our community.”
