St. John's (25 March 2009) - Carol Furlong has been re-elected president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE) for a third two-year term. Bert Blundon has been returned as secretary-treasurer — also for another two-year term.
They were unopposed when the deadline for nominations passed at 5 p.m. on March 24. No other candidates filed papers. Contested elections within NAPE are conducted by a province-wide ballot. Each of the union's approximately 22,000 members is eligible to vote by secret ballot.
James Clancy, national president of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), and Larry Brown, NUPGE's national secretary-treasurer, extended personal congratulations to Furlong and Blundon on their re-election. NAPE is a Component of the National Union.
Furlong took over NAPE in 2005 and recently presided over the bargaining of new four-year contracts for most NAPE bargaining units. The next NAPE provincial policy convention is scheduled June 24-28 in St. John's.
