Cape Breton police ratify new NSGEU contract

'Congratulations to the bargaining committee who worked very hard over a long set of talks to achieve this agreement.'

Halifax (21 Aug. 2009) – The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) says members of its Cape Breton Police local have ratified a new collective agreement reached by negotiators earlier this month.

The contract for members of Local 1995 was reached just prior to binding arbitration hearings scheduled in mid-August. The major issue was wages. Negotiations began in October 2008 and continued until February 2009. Conciliation efforts began in April.

"Congratulations to the bargaining committee who worked very hard over a long set of talks to achieve this agreement," the union says in an update on its website.

"This round of talks was delayed by a long battle with the former government on the limitations imposed by legislation on arbitral items. The committee and membership have shown a great deal of patience and solidarity throughout these talks."
