Burin Peninsula strike passes first anniversary

Demonstrators appeal to outgoing and incoming premiers to step in and resolve the long impasse.

St. John's (30 Nov. 2010) - The Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour (NLFL) is appealing to outgoing Premier Danny Williams and incoming Premier Kathy Dunderdale to end the year-long strike by 15 workers on the Burin Peninsula.

The employees of the Burin-Marystown Training and Employment Board marked their 365th day on strike on Nov. 20 with a demonstration outside legislature member Clyde Jackman's office.

NLFL president Lana Payne calls it is the longest public sector strike ever in Canada. The fact that it is affecting innocent people, including developmentally challenged adults who are trying to fit into the work place, makes it even more callous, she says.

Carol Furlong, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE), met with Jackman and his legislature colleague Darin King following the demonstration.

She says she is optimistic the strike can be resolved if government is ready to move from its position.
