Critical report released on youth and children's mental health in B.C.
Vancouver (12 April 2013) – Vulnerable mentally ill youth are falling through the cracks of a fragmented, under-resourced provincial medical system and are not receiving the treatment and support they really need, said B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth in a highly critical report released this week.
The B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) strongly supports the Representative’s call to improve mental health services, including increased resources, proper coordination and immediate improvements to direct services in emergency, acute and community-based mental health care systems.
Responsive mental health services for transition-age youth aged between 16 and 19 years can be life changing. Currently, only six percent of the Ministry of Children and Family Development budget goes to mental health.
