"We stand with OPSEU and urge you to reconsider your archaic policies and harmful push for privatization." — Stephanie Smith, BCGEU President.
Burnaby (16 July 2019) —Stephanie Smith, President of the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) has written to Premier Ford in support of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) and their stance against the government's movement towards breaking The Beer Store contract and privatizing provincial agencies like the Liquor Control Board of Ontario.
BCGEU/NUPGE shares experience and concerns about liquor privatization
The letter addresses the negative impact of privatization for workers and communities, pointing to the loss of better prices and selection, weakened social responsibility and reduced public revenues. Smith's letter also emphasizes the knowledgeable staff members who would face significant uncertainty and insecurity in the future of their work.
"The BCGEU has experienced the threat of privatization of the B.C. government liquorstores and distribution centres, putting jobs at risk. We empathize with the uncertainty and stress this poses for many individuals and their families," Smith wrote.
Other issues raised by the letter include the government's devastating policies and funding cuts in areas such as public education, health, social services and the environment.
"There is a need to prioritize, serve and represent your constituents in government. We stand with OPSEU and urge you to reconsider your archaic policies and harmful push for privatization," said Smith.
