Burnaby (2 Nov. 2006) - The British Columbia Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) holds its provincial policy convention this weekend in Burnaby. Activists from across the province will meet Friday night through Sunday at the Metrotown Hilton Hotel. The delegates will take stock of BCGEU’s activities and achievements since the union’s last convention in June 2005. Formal proceedings begin Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and continue through to 5 p.m. Sunday.
A wide range of resolutions to make the union stronger and address important public policy and social justice issues will be debated. These include:
- strategies to organize young workers;
- measures to press governments in Canada to act on the mounting global warming threat;
- motions calling for the union to continue a number of important campaign efforts like child care and the restoration of funding for women’s centres; and
- a call for a significant increase in welfare rates.
Addresses will be given by BCGEU president George Heyman (Saturday 11:25 a.m.), environmentalist David Suzuki (Saturday 2:15 p.m.), and B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair (Sunday 10:30 a.m.).
