BCGEU members at Westminster Children's After School Society take strike vote

Workers back bargaining priorities with strike vote.

Vancouver (17 July 2013) – Members of the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) employed at Westminster Children's After School Society (WCASS) have voted in favour of job action.

Members looking for an end to employer's concessionary bargaining

Members who voted, clearly support their bargaining committee's call for a strike mandate.

The bargaining committee made it clear to the members that, "we support the need to see an end to the employer's concessions at the bargaining table regarding medical benefits".

The message the workers have brought to the bargaining table has been consistent: "this is not a round of bargaining that will contain any concessions for medical benefits from our membership."

Proceeding to mediation

With a strike mandate in hand, the bargaining committee will apply for mediation to the Labour Relations Board of B.C.

Under provincial labour law, the union now has 90 days to serve 72-hour strike notice, IF it elects to do so.

BCGEU/NUPGE members are looking to meet with the employer at the Labour Board to reach fair and reasonable deal.
