BCGEU job action aimed at City of Fort St. John management – not disrupting the public

City of Fort St. John suspends some recreational services despite union's commitment to not disrupt public.

Vancouver (22 July 2015) — The British Columbia Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) has reluctantly begun job action this morning. Of the 183 members they represent at the City of Fort St. John, 58 are off the job today. Thirty work at city hall. The rest are from different departments within the city.

City has suspended recreational activities

Essential services are being maintained. The union is doing everything possible to avoid disruption to the public.

Any decisions to close the arena or suspend summer recreational activities were made by the City of Fort St. John.

False claims that union has targeted recreational services

Contrary to other reports, the BCGEU/NUPGE job action has been structured in a way as to NOT interfere with recreational services, such as children’s camps. BCGEU/NUPGE members are continuing to operate the pool and sports centre, and are available for the arena and recreational activities.

Looking for parity with other city employees

The BCGEU/NUPGE is seeking a more equitable offer in line with what other city employees are earning, including retroactivity.
