Vancouver (14 Mar. 2014) — Darryl Walker, President of the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) and Doug Kinna, who is the Chairperson for BCGEU's Social, Health and Information Component are calling on the Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre in Burnaby to immediately comply with outstanding orders issued by the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) to address the violence against health care workers.

“Violence is not part of our members’ jobs. They have a right to go to work without fear of being verbally or physically assaulted,” says Darryl Walker. “The employer’s first priority should be to ensure a safe workplace. They have a legal obligation to eliminate the risk of violence to workers. Violence is not acceptable at any workplace.”
The BCGEU/NUPGE is scheduled to meet with the Minister of Children and Family Development, Stephanie Cadieux, on April 10, and will be urging the Minister to undertake the necessary measures to stop the violent assaults on our members.
The union will continue to monitor the situation to ensure appropriate measures are in place to protect all members.
