Vaisakhi marks the birth of Sikhism and the beginning of the New Year
Surrey (21 April 2009) – Members of the B.C. Government and Services’ Employees Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) joined the approximately 200,000 people who celebrated Vaisakhi at the Surrey and Vancouver parades on April 11. The annual parades with colourful floats, music and revellers took place on the same day this year.
Vaisakhi marks the birth of Sikhism and the beginning of the New Year. Free food is given out in the spirit of seva (service to the community).
BCGEU set up booths in the Newton area of Surrey and in South Vancouver to greet people and give out food and refreshments as part of the celebrations.
