March is the month for British Columbians to take the time to learn how community social service workers contribute to making communities better all across the province.
Victoria (1 March 2011) - In the shadow of recent funding cuts and “service redesign” imposed on this chronically underfunded sector, workers struggle to continue to provide quality services to those in need.
However, the cuts have only added to critical employment recruitment and retention issues, plummeting employee morale, depressed wages and inadequate benefits that are well below those of comparable jobs. At the same time, the economic crisis has increased demand for the vital services provided by community-based social services agencies and workers.
BC frontline community social service workers are still fighting for a fair deal in collective bargaining and now more than ever, communities need to recognize that these services are indispensable in a society that recognizes dignity and opportunity for all.
