B.C. public service re-organization is going ahead

'There is a commitment from both the union and the government to work together to see that the changes can be implemented in as smooth a way as possible.'

Vancouver (7 Dec. 2010) - The British Columbia Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) says it has been briefed by the province on plans to re-organize the public service, including creation of a new ministry of natural resource operations.

"There is a commitment from both the union and the government to work together to see that the changes can be implemented in as smooth a way as possible," the union says in an update.

The government has indicated that all employees should know their positions by Christmas as well as the ministry or program where they will be working.

"Around 2,600 staff will be impacted by the change," the union says.

"Government representatives said that although most staff will remain in the same office in the same job, overtime, procedures and duties may change. There are no layoffs planned and there will be no involuntary geographic moves."

The union has asked, and the government has agreed, to look at a number of issues, such as the impact on auxiliaries and the hours of work of employees who will be working side-by-side.

"These issues and others will be dealt with on an ongoing basis and a process to deal with transition issues is under advisement," the union says.

"I'm pleased with the results of the meeting," says Darryl Walker, BCGEU president. "A clearer picture is emerging as to what changes the government has in mind and we have made a commitment to work with the government on the ongoing issues associated with the re-organization."
